Medieval Clothing of Noble Women

During the medieval period, the noble women’s clothing was very complicated. There are layers of clothes to put on the body of women. Unlike the common women’s dress and tunic, noble women would wear underclothes, dresses, tunics, overcoats. The underclothes consisted of breeches, chemise and hose. They were covered with underskirts which was usually made of yellow or white linen or silk.

Then the underskirt was covered with a long, trailing gown with wide sleeves sometimes the trumpet sleeves. This long training gown was in fabric of velvet, furs, silks, lace, cottons and taffeta. This is a main part for noble women’s clothing. The gown had some decorations like gems, lace and embroidery on the hem, the neck and the sleeves. What covered the gown is the tunic with long length. And besides these all clothes, whenever the noble women wanted to go out, there would be a cloak or cate for them to protect them from the wind and snow and keep them warm.
Though the clothes for noble women in the medieval period are kind of complicated for the so many layers of them, the clothes show both the noble status of being wealthy and difference. And this is the way noble women would dress them in the ancient medieval age.
